Empowering Assam's Rural Girls Through Technology

Gramya Vikash Mancha

In the remote villages of Assam, Gramya Vikash Mancha (GVM) is bridging the educational divide through technology-driven learning. Since its inception in 1999, this nonprofit has been working with marginalized communities, striving to build a peaceful, prosperous, and exploitation-free society.

One of GVM's flagship initiatives is the Integrated Approach to Technology in Education (ITE), launched in 2015 with support from Tata Trusts and TISS Mumbai. In partnership with the Assam state education department, this program integrates digital learning tools into government schools, transforming both teaching and learning experiences.

Initially implemented in 50 government schools across Nalbari, Kamrup, and Baksa districts, the program has now expanded to 14 model schools in some of Assam's most underdeveloped educational blocks.

How Rukmani Trust Strengthened Their Mission

Recognizing the transformative impact of GVM's work, Rukmani Trust partnered with them in January 2021 to expand their reach to more government model schools. Our support has enabled GVM to scale its efforts, bringing technology-enabled education to remote villages.

The project focuses on four key areas:

  • Training teachers to effectively integrate technology into classrooms.
  • Empowering students through digital tools and guided learning support.
  • Strengthening school-community linkages to enhance educational outcomes.
  • Building a network of teachers to share best practices and resources.

Impact at Scale

With Rukmani Trust's support, GVM has significantly expanded its reach.

  • 400+ government schools are actively engaged in the program.
  • 9,000+ students are benefiting from technology-powered education.

These children are not just learning digital literacy but also developing critical thinking skills and gaining access to knowledge that was once beyond their reach.

On the Ground: A Firsthand Experience

As pandemic restrictions eased, Trustees of Rukmani Trust, along with resource consultants, traveled deep into Assam's remote interiors—braving heavy rains and floods—to witness the impact firsthand.

Meeting the students and teachers, seeing their enthusiasm, and understanding the daily challenges they overcome reaffirming our commitment to this cause.
